Can You Install Laminate Flooring Over Floorboards, Tiles or Concrete?
Replacing a floor can transform the appearance and practicality of a room, but many homeowners are unsure whether the existing surface needs to be removed first. Taking up old flooring can add time, mess and cost to a project, so it is understandable to ask whether laminate can simply be installed over the floor that is already there.
In many cases, laminate flooring can be laid over floorboards, tiles or concrete. However, the existing surface must be dry, stable, clean and level enough to support the new floor. The correct preparation will depend on the type and condition of the subfloor, as well as the installation guidance supplied with the laminate.

What Does Laminate Flooring Need Beneath It?
Laminate is usually installed as a floating floor. This means the boards connect to one another but are not normally fixed directly to the subfloor. The completed surface rests above a suitable underlay and must be able to expand and contract as room conditions change.
Because the boards are connected, problems in the surface below can affect a much larger area. A high spot may place strain on the joints, while a hollow or dip may allow the boards to flex whenever someone walks across them. Over time, this movement can weaken the click system and lead to gaps, creaking or damaged edges.
Before laminate is fitted, the subfloor should be:

Firm and free from movement

Clean and clear of debris

Dry and protected from moisture

Flat within the product manufacturer’s stated tolerance

Free from loose nails, screws, tiles or broken sections

Suitable for the chosen underlay and installation system
Even though laminate can hide the colour and appearance of an old floor, it cannot correct structural or moisture problems underneath it.
Can You Lay Laminate Flooring Over Wooden Floorboards?
Laminate can often be installed over wooden floorboards, provided they are secure and reasonably level. Traditional timber floorboards are common in older homes and may provide a suitable base after the necessary preparation.
The first step is to walk across the entire room and listen for squeaks or movement. Loose boards should be secured using appropriate screws or fixings. Care is needed when inserting new fixings because pipes and electrical cables may run below the floor.
Any raised nail heads should be driven down or removed. Damaged, cracked or rotten boards should be repaired or replaced rather than covered. Laminate should never be installed over timber that is weak or affected by ongoing damp.
The direction of the boards can also matter. Where possible, the laminate should be installed across the direction of the existing floorboards rather than running parallel with them. This can help spread the load and reduce the risk of the new boards following movement or dips in the timber below.
However, the recommended direction may also depend on room shape, natural light and the manufacturer’s fitting instructions. If the floorboards are particularly uneven, an additional layer of suitable flooring-grade plywood may be required to create a more consistent surface.

How Do You Prepare Uneven Floorboards?
Older floorboards are rarely completely flat. Some variation may be manageable, but pronounced ridges, dips or cupping should not be ignored.
A long straightedge can be used across different sections of the floor to identify high and low areas. The maximum permitted deviation will depend on the laminate product, so the fitting instructions should always be checked.
High spots may sometimes be sanded down carefully. Low areas may require repair, suitable levelling products or an overlay board. Not every smoothing compound is suitable for timber, so a product designed for use over flexible wooden subfloors should be selected.
Applying a thick or soft underlay is not a reliable way to correct an uneven floor. Underlay can provide acoustic benefits, cushioning and minor support, but it is not intended to bridge significant dips. Too much movement below the laminate can place pressure on the joints.
Ventilation below suspended timber floors should also be considered. Existing air bricks and ventilation routes must not be blocked during renovation work. Poor airflow beneath wooden floors may contribute to moisture problems which can damage both the subfloor and the new covering.
Can Laminate Flooring Be Installed Over Tiles?
It is often possible to install laminate flooring over existing ceramic or porcelain tiles. This can save the work involved in breaking up and removing a tiled floor, but only when the tiles remain firmly bonded and the surface is suitable.
Every area should be checked for loose, cracked or hollow-sounding tiles. A hollow sound may indicate that a tile is no longer fully attached to the base. Loose sections should be removed and repaired before the laminate is laid.
Deep grout lines and uneven tile edges can also cause problems. If the joints between the tiles are wide or recessed, they may need to be filled using a compatible smoothing product. Raised edges or lipped tiles may need further attention to create a flatter surface.
The completed floor height is another important consideration. Leaving the tiles in place, then adding underlay and laminate, can raise the floor noticeably. This may affect:

Doors may need to be trimmed and new threshold profiles may be required where the laminate meets another floor covering. These details should be planned before installation starts rather than addressed once the floor is already in place.
Can Laminate Be Laid Over Tiles in a Kitchen?
Laminate can sometimes be installed over kitchen tiles, but the room conditions and product suitability should be considered carefully.
Kitchens are exposed to spills, steam and changes in humidity. A laminate product suitable for kitchen use should be selected and the fitting guidance should be followed closely. Water-resistant laminate can offer greater protection from everyday spills, but it should not be treated as completely waterproof unless the manufacturer specifically states otherwise.
Leaks from sinks, dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerators can spread beneath a floating floor without being noticed immediately. Appliances and plumbing should therefore be checked before the new floor is fitted.
It is also important to decide whether the laminate will run beneath fixed kitchen units. Floating floors generally need room to move and should not be trapped beneath heavy fixed cabinetry unless the product instructions allow it. In many installations, the kitchen units remain fixed to the subfloor and the laminate is fitted around them with the correct expansion allowance.
Can You Install Laminate Flooring Over Concrete?
Concrete is one of the most common bases for laminate flooring, particularly in extensions, newer homes and ground-floor rooms. It can provide a strong and stable subfloor, but moisture and surface level must be assessed before installation.
Concrete may look dry while still containing enough moisture to affect a laminate floor. New concrete and screed can take a considerable amount of time to dry fully. The floor should be tested using an appropriate moisture testing method rather than judged by appearance alone.
A suitable damp-proof membrane may be required beneath the underlay. Some laminate underlays include an integrated vapour barrier, while others need a separate membrane. The joints must normally be sealed correctly to form a continuous layer.
The exact requirement will depend on the laminate, the underlay and the position of the room. Ground-floor concrete is more likely to need moisture protection than a dry floor between upper levels, though manufacturer guidance should always take priority.
Installing laminate over damp concrete can lead to swollen board edges, distorted joints, odours and mould beneath the floor. Moisture problems must be resolved before the laminate is installed.

How Flat Does a Concrete Floor Need to Be?
Concrete should be flat, though it does not necessarily need to be perfectly level from one side of the room to the other. Flatness refers to the absence of sudden dips, ridges or bumps that would cause movement in the finished floor.
A straightedge placed across the concrete can reveal uneven sections. High areas may need to be ground down, while low areas may require a suitable self-levelling compound. Dust, grease, adhesive residue and loose material should be removed before any preparation product is applied.
Cracks should also be examined. Small, stable cracks may be repairable, but active or widening cracks can indicate movement in the base. Covering an unresolved structural issue may only hide it temporarily.
Concrete floors should be thoroughly cleaned after preparation. Small pieces of grit trapped below the underlay may create pressure points or noise once the laminate is installed.
Can Laminate Be Installed Over Existing Vinyl or Lino?
Laminate can sometimes be installed over vinyl sheet flooring or lino when the existing surface is firmly bonded, smooth, dry and in good condition.
Loose edges, bubbles, torn sections and soft areas should be repaired or removed. Cushioned vinyl can create too much movement beneath the laminate, particularly when combined with a separate underlay. This may place unnecessary stress on the joints.
The installation guidance should confirm whether the existing vinyl can remain. In some cases, it may act as a basic moisture-resistant layer, but it should not automatically be treated as a substitute for a specified damp-proof membrane.
Older floor coverings and adhesives may also require professional assessment before removal. Homeowners renovating older properties should avoid sanding, scraping or disturbing unknown materials until they have been identified.
Can You Lay Laminate Over Carpet?
Laminate should not normally be installed over standard fitted carpet or carpet underlay. Carpet is too soft and unstable to support the click joints properly. The boards may flex as people walk across them, leading to separation or damage.
Carpet and its underlay should be removed fully. Any gripper rods, staples and adhesive residue should also be taken up so the subfloor can be inspected.
Some very firm commercial carpet tiles may be treated differently by certain manufacturers, but this is not a general rule. The laminate fitting instructions must specifically permit installation over that type of surface.
Removing the carpet also provides the opportunity to find problems that were previously hidden, including loose floorboards, damp patches, cracks or uneven areas.
Do You Always Need Underlay Beneath Laminate?
Most laminate flooring requires underlay, unless the boards already have a suitable layer attached to the back.
Underlay can provide several benefits. It can reduce impact sound, support the click system and help the floor feel more comfortable underfoot. Some products also provide thermal insulation or moisture protection.
The correct type depends on the subfloor and the room. Concrete bases may require an underlay with a vapour barrier, while timber subfloors often need a breathable product without an additional damp-proof layer. Underfloor heating requires an underlay with low thermal resistance so heat can pass through effectively.
Using more than one layer of underlay is not recommended unless specifically permitted. An excessively soft base may allow too much movement in the laminate joints.
Underlay should not be chosen only by thickness. Its density, acoustic performance, moisture resistance and compatibility with the flooring are equally important.
What About Underfloor Heating?
Many laminate products can be used with compatible underfloor heating, but suitability must be confirmed before purchase. The combined thermal resistance of the laminate and underlay must remain within the heating system’s limits.
The subfloor should be dry, smooth and properly prepared. Heating systems may need to be commissioned and run according to a specific process before the flooring is installed.
Once the laminate is fitted, the temperature should usually be increased gradually. Sudden changes in heat can place unnecessary stress on the boards. Maximum surface temperature limits must also be followed.
Electric and water-based underfloor heating systems may have different installation requirements. The heating manufacturer’s guidance and the laminate instructions should be considered together.
Should You Remove Skirting Boards Before Installation?
Laminate requires an expansion gap around the edge of the room. This allows the floor to move slightly as temperature and humidity change.
One option is to remove the skirting boards before fitting, then reinstall them over the expansion gap. This can create a neat and integrated finish.
Where removing the skirting is not practical, a suitable beading or scotia can be fixed to the skirting board to cover the gap. The trim should never be fixed through the laminate because this would prevent the floor from moving freely.
Expansion gaps are also required around radiator pipes, door frames, kitchen islands and other fixed objects. Larger rooms may need additional expansion joints, particularly across doorways or between connected areas.
Common Problems When Laying Laminate Over an Existing Floor
Many installation problems begin because the existing floor was not examined closely enough. Common issues include:
Movement and Clicking Sounds
Movement may be caused by an uneven subfloor, loose floorboards, unsuitable underlay or damaged click joints. The source should be corrected rather than relying on trims or furniture to hold the floor down.
Raised or Peaked Boards
Laminate may lift when the required expansion gap has not been left or when the floor has been trapped beneath fixed objects. Moisture can also cause the boards to swell.
Gaps Between Boards
Gaps may develop if joints were not connected properly, the subfloor is uneven or the floor has experienced excessive movement.
Moisture Damage
Swollen edges and distorted boards often indicate a leak, damp subfloor or unsuitable cleaning method. The moisture source must be identified before damaged boards are replaced.
Uneven Transitions
Adding laminate over an existing floor increases the overall height. If this is not planned carefully, the result may include awkward steps between rooms or doors that no longer open properly.
When Should the Existing Floor Be Removed?
Although installing over an existing surface can be convenient, removal is sometimes the safer option.
The old floor should normally be taken up when it is:

Severely uneven

Affected by damp, rot or mould

Covered in thick or cushioned material

Raising the final floor height too much

Hiding a subfloor that requires repair

Incompatible with the laminate fitting instructions
Removing the old surface can also make it easier to inspect pipework, floorboards and concrete for damage. It may result in a lower and more consistent finished floor height across adjoining rooms.
The additional work at the start of the project can prevent more expensive problems later.
Preparing the Room Before Installation
The laminate should be stored and acclimatised according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Packs often need to remain unopened and laid flat in the room for a set period before fitting.
The room should be at a normal living temperature and any wet trades, such as plastering or screeding, should be completed and fully dry.
Fixed obstructions, door clearances and floor transitions should be measured in advance. The first and final rows should also be planned so narrow strips are avoided where possible.
Boards from several packs can be mixed during installation to distribute colour and pattern variations naturally. Even printed laminate designs can contain repeated boards, so checking the pattern helps create a more balanced finish.
Choosing Laminate for Your Existing Subfloor
The right product will depend on where it is being installed, how much use the room receives and what lies beneath it.
A busy hallway or living room may require a more durable wear rating than a lightly used bedroom. Kitchens and entrance areas may benefit from water-resistant features, while upper-floor rooms may need an underlay selected for better sound reduction.
Board thickness should not be viewed as the only measure of quality. The strength of the joint, surface resistance, core construction and suitability for the intended room should all be considered.
