Description
The Treatex Classic Colour Collection is an opaque, oil-based colour finish for wood, made to last on interior and exterior surfaces alike. It is a good choice for doors, windows, fences, sheds, cladding, tables and kitchen cabinets, and Treatex says it can go on flooring too (two coats of hardwax oil are recommended on top for a floor).
It is made from natural, sustainable raw materials including soybean oil, sunflower oil, beeswax and carnauba wax, and is safe for use on children's toys. There are 22 colours, from soft neutrals like Cool Cotton, Bleached Wood and Sea Mist through to Sage Green, Terracotta, Midnight Blue and Black.
Key facts
- Pack sizes: 500ml and 1L
- Coverage: about 12.5m² per 0.5L and 25m² per 1L in one coat, or about 7.5m² per 0.5L over two coats
- Recoating: second coat after 12 hours, then leave 12 to 24 hours to dry. A third coat may be needed when putting a light colour onto dark timber
- Conditions: timber moisture below 18% and a temperature between 8 and 24 degrees Celsius during application and drying
- Resistance: UV and water resistant, and protects against water getting in and the wood silvering
- Use: interior and exterior; works on all timbers
How to use it
It works best on unfinished timber, so sand off flaking or peeling finishes, make sure the surface is dry and free of dirt, and stir the tin thoroughly before and during use. Buy enough to finish the job and mix tins together so the colour matches. Brush or roll in the direction of the grain, and on exterior work put the first coat on all sides before installation if you can, being generous on the end grain. On high tannin timbers such as oak, cedar, teak and mahogany, prime outdoors with Stain Inhibitor first. Rough sawn timber will use two to three times more product. Used oily cloths and rags should be laid flat to dry before you throw them away, because oils that cure can heat up and in rare cases catch fire if they are left screwed up.
