Description
Treatex Iroko Oil is a long-lasting exterior finish for dense tropical hardwoods. It protects against UV and weather damage, with natural pigments that give UV protection without hiding the grain. It is made from sunflower, soybean and rapeseed oils, with no biocides or toxic ingredients, and Treatex says it is safe for children's toys.
It is designed for Iroko, Bangkirai, Yellow Balau, Karri, Massaranduba and Ipe, and is hard wearing enough for decking, garden furniture and other exterior joinery. It is not suitable for high tannin timbers such as oak and sweet chestnut.
Key facts
- Pack sizes: 500ml, 1L and 2.5L
- Coverage: about 50m² per 2.5L tin in one coat; old, dry, porous or rough sawn timber will use more
- Coats: two coats recommended, leaving about 12 hours to dry
- Use: interior and exterior; unfinished hardwood
How to use it
Remove any closed finish such as paint first, and let oily timbers like iroko and bangkirai weather for at least three months, or wash them with warm soapy water, rinse and dry. Make sure the surface is dry and clean, with moisture content below 18% and no rain forecast. A trial patch is wise before you start the whole job. Used oily cloths and rags should be laid flat to dry before you throw them away, because oils that cure can heat up and in rare cases catch fire if they are left screwed up.
