Dryback LVT Installation Guide

1. Acclimatise the Tiles or Planks: Leave the packs unopened in the room for at least 24 to 48 hours before fitting, at normal room temperature, so they settle in before you commit adhesive to the floor.

2. Prepare and Test the Subfloor: The subfloor must be clean, dry, perfectly smooth, and structurally sound, since any imperfection will telegraph through a bonded floor far more than a floating one. On concrete subfloors, test the moisture content first. If it's above the adhesive manufacturer's threshold, a damp proof membrane is usually required before you go any further, and porous subfloors will often need priming too.

3. Measure the Area and Allow for Waste: Measure the room and add 5 to 10% extra for wastage on a plank layout, or 15 to 20% for herringbone.

4. Choose and Apply the Adhesive: Use the adhesive type recommended by the manufacturer, either pressure sensitive or a hard-set full-spread adhesive depending on the product and setting, and spread it with the correct notched trowel in small, workable sections rather than across the whole room at once, working within the adhesive's open time.

5. Lay the Flooring:
For plank: bed each plank firmly into the wet adhesive, working in one direction, and butt the joints tightly together. Roll the floor with a flooring roller as you go to remove trapped air and ensure full, even contact, and wipe away any excess adhesive immediately before it cures.
For herringbone: set the room out first exactly as you would for click, finding the centre point and dry laying a row to confirm the pattern is square before any adhesive goes down. Because repositioning becomes very difficult once a plank is bonded, spread adhesive progressively just ahead of where you're working, rather than across a larger area, and work outward from the centre in both directions.
A dryback floor is bonded permanently to the subfloor, so unlike click, it generally doesn't need an expansion gap around the perimeter, though it's worth checking the manufacturer's guidance for large commercial areas, which may still call for movement joints.

6. Cutting Tiles or Planks: As with click LVT, flexible dryback vinyl can usually be scored with a utility knife and snapped along a straightedge, while rigid planks need a fine tooth saw or a dedicated vinyl cutter. Number each herringbone perimeter piece as you cut it, since no two edge cuts are quite the same.

7. Finishing Touches: Since there's typically no expansion gap to cover, skirting can usually sit straight against the finished floor edge. Fit transition strips at doorways, and allow the adhesive to fully cure for the time stated by the manufacturer before subjecting the floor to heavy foot traffic or moving furniture back in.

DIY vs. Professional Installation
Dryback is a more technical job than click across the board, mainly because of the subfloor testing and adhesive work in steps 2 and 4, and because mistakes are far harder to undo once a plank is bonded down. Plank layouts are achievable for an experienced, patient DIYer, but herringbone dryback combines the trickiest setting out with the least room for error, so professional installation is strongly worth considering there in particular.

What is dryback LVT flooring?
Dryback LVT is a rigid luxury vinyl tile or plank designed to be bonded permanently to the subfloor using a separate adhesive, rather than clicking together as a floating floor. The name refers to the plank itself having no pre-applied adhesive backing, the adhesive is applied to the subfloor by the installer. As with click LVT, dryback is available in both plank and herringbone or chevron parquet-style formats.

What's the difference between click and dryback LVT flooring?
Click LVT floats above the subfloor and interlocks without glue, making it more straightforward for DIY fitting and easier to lift and replace individual planks later. Dryback LVT is bonded permanently to the subfloor with adhesive, giving a lower profile, completely rock solid finish that's better suited to commercial environments, wheeled traffic, and rooms where floor height is limited, but it's a more technical, generally professional installation.

What are the advantages of dryback LVT flooring?
Dryback LVT gives an extremely stable, permanent, and quiet finish underfoot, with a slimmer profile than click LVT that's useful where door clearances or floor build up are a concern. It's fully waterproof, highly durable under heavy or wheeled traffic, and well suited to both busy commercial spaces and domestic homes.

How is dryback LVT flooring installed?
The subfloor must be clean, dry, smooth, and perfectly flat, since any imperfection will show through a bonded floor far more than a floating one, and it often needs priming first. Adhesive is spread onto the subfloor with a notched trowel in small, workable sections, and each plank is bedded into it and rolled to ensure full, bubble free contact within the adhesive's working time. Herringbone dryback follows the same careful centre line setting out as click herringbone, but because the adhesive is applied progressively and repositioning becomes difficult once bonded, it's an even more technical job, and professional installation is strongly recommended.

Does a concrete subfloor need any special preparation before laying dryback LVT?
Often, yes. Concrete subfloors need to be tested for moisture content, and if this is above the adhesive manufacturer's threshold, a damp proof membrane is usually required first to prevent moisture damage from beneath.

Does dryback LVT flooring need underlay?
No, dryback LVT is bonded directly to the subfloor and doesn't use an underlay. This is part of what gives it its slim, solid profile compared to click LVT.

Is dryback LVT flooring waterproof?
Yes. Like click LVT, dryback is made almost entirely from PVC vinyl, so it's fully waterproof through the plank itself, not just water resistant on the surface.

Can dryback LVT flooring be installed in wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens?
Yes, its waterproof, fully bonded construction makes it particularly well suited to kitchens, bathrooms, and other moisture prone spaces, provided the subfloor is properly prepared and sealed at the edges.

Can dryback LVT flooring be installed over underfloor heating?
Yes, most dryback LVT is compatible with underfloor heating, and its bonded construction actually helps with even heat transfer. Always check the specific product's guidance and stay within the manufacturer's recommended maximum temperature.

What does the wear layer on LVT flooring mean?
The wear layer is the clear protective coating on top of the design layer, and its thickness determines how much wear and tear the floor can take. Dryback ranges aimed at commercial or heavy traffic use typically carry a thicker wear layer, often 0.5mm or more, than entry level domestic products.

Can a damaged dryback LVT plank be replaced?
It's possible, but more involved than with click LVT, since the damaged plank needs to be carefully removed from its bonded adhesive and a new one fitted in its place. This is usually a job for a professional rather than a straightforward DIY fix.

How long does dryback LVT flooring last?
With proper care, dryback LVT can last for decades, and commercial grade ranges in particular are often backed by warranties ranging from around 10 years up to a lifetime guarantee, depending on the product and setting.

How do you clean dryback LVT flooring?
Sweep or vacuum regularly, then clean with a damp mop and a cleaning solution made for vinyl floors. Avoid excessive water pooling around the joints.

Can dryback LVT flooring be cleaned with a steam mop?
No, steam mops should be avoided. The heat and moisture can affect the adhesive bond and the finish over time, so stick to a damp mop or cloth instead.

Does dryback LVT flooring add to a home's resale value?
Yes, a well-fitted, good quality dryback LVT floor can enhance a home's appeal to potential buyers, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, and other practical spaces where a genuinely waterproof, permanent floor is a real selling point.
